This is a sad turn of events. The upside is that JAFI is “furious,” their true motivations having been exposed. I find it unappealing, and frankly scary, when a group thinks they know someone’s destiny. The Yemeni Jews should not be part of JAFI and Satmar’s political dreidel match. The most important thing is the Yemeni Jewish community’s safety. The best option would be to protect them in their Yemeni homeland – unfortunately, the Yemeni government has been unable or unwilling to make them feel secure. If the community wants to leave, they should be allowed to emigrate to where they wish – to chose their own destiny. I am surprised they choose America, given Israel has the largest Yemeni Jewish community, but I can understand their hesitance. Yemeni Jews are not particularly Zionist, at least those remaining.

I am curious as to the extensiveness of State’s role in the project. One one level, UJC would have to “work with” the State Department to process the paperwork. I would hope that State responded to requests by the Yemeni Jews themselves, and not Rabbi Teitelbaum or any other Jewish agency. There is a difference between facilitating and encouraging.

If not handle correctly, this migration could have a detrimental effect on Yemeni-US relations. There have been indications that the Yemeni government may not have been as surprised by the supposedly covert operation that saw a family of ten immigrate to Israel last month. It would be hard for Yemen to prohibit Yemenis from traveling to America, and I assume that Saleh would prefer they migrate to the US over Israel. The trick will be to accomplish it without incurring the animosity of the Yemeni public.

NewsYemen has some interviews, and says that their are worries that if Yemen’s Jews are relocated to a housing complex in Sana’a it will just become a terrorist target similar to an embassy. Actually, they have been housed in Tourist city across the street from the U.S. embassy, so its probably not far from the truth. There is also worry about the creation of a “Jewish slum.” The paper says that immigration is imminent.

UJC to pull 110 Jews out of Yemen

The United Jewish Communities is working with the US State Department, local federations and the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society to implement the evacuation and help finance the $800,000 expense of absorbing the 110 Yemenite Jews, who represent more than a third of the roughly 280-strong community.

“The funding would go toward such resettlement costs as housing, food and social-service programs,” the the UJC said in a statement on Tuesday.

Jewish Agency officials blasted the move.

Jews “should not immigrate to the United States. The place of Jews is in their homeland, the Land of Israel, and like all the Jews of the world, the Jews of Yemen have to make aliya to Israel. That is their destiny,” a senior agency official told the Post.

The agency is particularly upset because the extraction of the Yemenite Jews comes at the behest of New York’s Satmar hassidic community, which opposes political Zionism and funds Jewish education institutions in Yemen.

Though the vast majority of Yemenite Jews now live in Israel, descendants of the large-scale aliya in the late 19th century and in the first years after the state’s founding, the Satmars have campaigned for decades to prevent those remaining in Yemen from making the move.

In January, Rabbi Aharon Teitelbaum, head of the Satmar hassidim in Kiryas Yoel in New York, called on US Jewry and the Obama administration to “save” the remaining Yemenite Jews, whom he said faced growing verbal and physical attacks.

Apparently in the wake of this request, the US Embassy in Sana’a has been interviewing Jewish families to grant them visas and refugee status in the United

States.The UJC defended the evacuation to the US by saying the community in Yemen was in real and immediate danger of attack by Islamist radicals. In December, Rabbi Moshe Yaish Nahara’i, the 30-year-old leader of the Jewish community in Rayda, was shot dead by an Islamist for refusing to convert to Islam.

Similar efforts by the Israeli government have been unsuccessful because Yemen has refused to approve passports for Jews wishing to leave for Israel.

“The entire Yemenite-Jewish community now lives in fear of Islamic extremists and the persecution they may inflict in response to Israeli and world events,” the UJC said. “As a result of worsening conditions, this community is actively seeking to leave the country.

“In keeping with our mission to rescue Jews in need anywhere in the world, UJC/Jewish federations is committed to working collectively to help the Yemenite Jewish community find asylum as quickly as possible in Israel and the United States.”

According to UJC president Howard Rieger, “As we have done time and time again, our continental Jewish community heard the cry of Jews in need and is answering the call. We must not rest if even one Jew [is] in danger and we will work diligently with our partners in Israel and the US to ensure the safe immigration, resettlement and absorption of our Yemenite family.”

An e-mail written by Rieger to UJA Federation of New York head John Ruskay also notes that the UJC will coordinate with the Jewish Agency to help those who wish to make aliya from the US to do so.

In February, the Jewish Agency brought a group of 10 Yemenite Jews on aliya.

من المتوقع أن يغادر خلال الأيام القادمة عدد من اليهود اليمنيين إلى الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية.
حاخام الطائفة اليهودية بعمران يحيي يعيش قال لـ(نيوزيمن): أن تزايد التهديدات التي يتلقاها معتنقي الديانة اليهودية من اليمنيين وتقصير الحكومة في حمايتهم، ساهم في عزمهم على الرحيل إلى إسرائيل وأمريكا.
وأضاف قائلا: “انتظرنا وعود الحكومة بنقلنا إلى صنعاء، ولكن دون جدوى، مما يجعلنا نعيش في خوف على حياتنا”، موضحا أنهم لايستطيعون الخروج إلى الأسواق إلا بحذر، ولذلك قرر الكثير من معتنقي الديانة اليهودية من اليمنيين الرحيل خوفا على حياتهم.
وأكد يعيش قيام مجموعة منهم بإجراء مقابلات بالسفارة الأمريكية للحصول على فيزا سفر إلى أمريكا.
وفيما يخص جوازاتهم المحتجزة لدى مصلحة الهجرة والجوازات قال يعيش أنها ما زالت لديهم، وأن مصلحة الهجرة بررت احتجازها لتعطّل أجهزة الكمبيوتر التي تتم طباعتها بها منذ أكثر من 3 شهور.
وكان مصدر أمنى قال لمجلة “أبواب” أن تقديرات أمنية تؤخر نقل اليهود إلى صنعاء، موضحا أن نقل حوالي 350 نسمة، وإسكانهم في مجمع سكنى خاص داخل العاصمة قد ينتهي بتحول هذا المجمع إلى هدف أمنى ثابت للجماعات الإرهابية كما هو حال السفارات الغربية وخصوصا الأمريكية في صنعاء ما يعنى طبقا لهذه التقديرات أن “نتيجة معاكسة قد يخلقها هذا التوجه الذي جاء في الأساس لـ “حماية أبناء الطائفة اليهودية” ومثل العبء الأمني الذي يشكله واقع استهداف السفارات الأجنبية، سيصنع “الغيتو” الخاص باليهود عبئا آخر على الحكومة لا يقل خطورة.
صحيفة “معاريف” الإسرائيلية قالت أن حوالي نصف يهود اليمن سيهاجرون في الأيام المقبلة إلى الولايات المتحدة حيث سيقطنون في أحياء سكنية تابعة لطائفة “أنصار ساتمر” المناهضة للصهيونية في مدينة نيويورك.
وسيتم نقل اليهود من اليمن إلى الولايات المتحدة بتمويل من ميزانية خاصة للإدارة الأميركية، وسيمول استيعابهم صندوق الجباية اليهودية (يو. جيه. سي) و”الفيدرالية اليهودية” ومنظمات رفاه اجتماعي يهودية و”انصار ساتمر”.
وقالت الصحيفة أن هذه العملية تشكل صفعة للحكومة الإسرائيلية و”الوكالة اليهودية” اللتان تحاربان، ومنذ سنوات، “أنصار ساتمر” من اجل تهجير يهود اليمن إلى إسرائيل وليس إلى الولايات المتحدة.
وأعربت “الوكالة اليهودية” عن استغرابها واستيائها من التدخل المتزايد لـ”صندوق الجباية اليهودية في الولايات المتحدة”، وخصوصاً مديرها العام هاورد ريغر بهذه العملية، لا سيما أن صندوق الجباية يتعاون مع “انصار ساتمر” عوضاً عن التعاون مع “الوكالة اليهودية” والحكومة الاسرائيلية.
وقال “صندوق الجباية اليهودية”، “قررنا مساعدة يهود اليمن على الهجرة وإعادة تسكينهم واستيعابهم، لا سيما أن حياتهم معرضة للخطر بعد ازدياد أعمال العنف ضدهم، وأضاف أننا نعمل بالتعاون التام مع الوكالة اليهودية من اجل تشجيع اليهود المتبقين في اليمن على الهجرة إلى دولة إسرائيل، ومع ذلك نعمل على ضمان امن هؤلاء الذين اختاروا الهجرة الى الولايات المتحدة”.
وكانت أسرة يهودية يمنية مكونة من 9 أفراد إلى إسرائيل وهي عائلة سعيد بن إسرائيل، غادرت صنعاء في منتصف شهر فبراير الماضي.
وبحسب مصادر رسمية يمنية فإن يهود اليمن لا يتجاوز عددهم 380 شخص بعد أن هاجر الكثيرين منهم إلى فلسطين في العملية التي عرفت باسم ” بساط الريح “، وبدأت عام 1948 حتى 1950 من القرن الماضي. وهاجر من اليمن في هذه الفترة زهاء 50 ألفا من اليهود اليمنيين.
